Foundation Year & Pre-Degree Pathways
Structured advisory for international students seeking a qualifying foundation or pathway year before entering a UK undergraduate programme.
Bridging the Gap to UK University
A foundation year (also called Year Zero or an International Foundation Programme) is a preparatory academic year designed for international students whose qualifications, grades or English level do not yet meet the direct entry requirements for a UK undergraduate degree.
On successful completion, students typically progress directly to Year 1 of their chosen degree at the same institution — without re-applying through UCAS.
University-Based
Offered directly by the target university, guaranteeing progression upon passing.
Pathway College
Delivered by an independent provider with articulation agreements to multiple universities.
English Entry
Typically IELTS 5.0–5.5 for entry to foundation, rising to 6.0–6.5 for degree progression.
Duration
Foundation years typically run for 9 months (September to June) or 12 months (January to December).
