Top Strategies for Test Day

Achieving your desired score often comes down to exam technique as much as English proficiency. Below are categorized tips selected by our master instructors.

Reading Section

  • Skimming & Scanning: Do not read every word. Skim for the general idea, then scan for specific keywords related to the questions.
  • True/False/Not Given: Only answer based on what is strictly stated in the text. Do not use outside knowledge. If the information isn't there, it is 'Not Given'.
  • Watch the Time: Allocate precisely 20 minutes per passage. Move on if you get stuck; you can return later if time permits.

Writing Section

  • Analyze the Prompt (Task 2): Spend the first 3-5 minutes planning. Ensure you directly address all parts of the essay question.
  • Paragraph Structure: Use the PEEL method (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) for body paragraphs to ensure logical flow.
  • Vocabulary (Lexical Resource): Do not use complex words unless you are 100% sure of their meaning and collocation context. Accuracy is better than inaccurate complexity.

Speaking Section

  • Extend Your Answers: Avoid one-word responses in Part 1. Give the answer, a reason, and a short example.
  • Keep Talking in Part 2: Continue speaking until the examiner stops you. It demonstrates fluency and confidence.
